How to Spell: 1) Honestly, the word, “JaiGeeShaVya” is a bit difficult to pronounce for persons not familiar with Hindus spelling patterns. Of course, it is not tough.
Jai of city “Jaipur” Gee of “Geek” sha of “Sharks” and vya of Sage Ved “ Vyas”…makes up-to the unique name “Jai Geeshavya”
The story of the legendary sage Shri Jaigeeshavya was narrated by Lord Subramanya Swamy to Sage Agasthya.
Lord Subramanya is the son of God Shiva. He has many names to him. Shri Kumar Swamy, Skanda, Muruga, Karthikeya etc

At present, the focus is on the life of a Sage, namely Shri ‘Jai Geeshavya’
Note: Hindus have a philosophy or principles of understanding. The universe is created and controlled by The God. To control the universe efficiently, the almighty created top graded, very powerful entities or souls and delegated his powers to them. Understanding is, as such, God Shiva has representative lords on behalf of him in the world. He appoints Lord Vishwanath to oversee and bless the devotees in the holy city Kashi, now called as Varanasi in modern times. The story begins here… | |
To honor the boon of the Lord Brahma to King Divodas, Lord Vishwanath left kashi to settle on mandar mountains range, along with his big family.
The sad news fell on ears of Shri Jaigeeshavya, a devotee of Lord Vishwanath. As shocked with unbearable absence of Lord Vishwanath in Kashi, Shri Jaigeeshavya took vow of “No food consumption, solid or liquid.” He did not even touch drop of water. This penance continued for many years.
He survived due to shiva blessings, secured with deep intense meditation. He took vow of this fast unto death unless he is blessed by manifestation of shiva. He practised that deadly vow in a deep cave.
Deep cave of Shri Jaigeeshavya is now under control of a Lord Ram temple trust in Ishwargangi, Nati imli, Varanasi. But the main temple belongs to another trust, just 100 meters away.
No one knew this penance except Mahadev (The Whole Kashi City vibrates 24 hours with this holy name in the praise of Lord Shiva since thousands of centuries)
This was the main reason why Lord Vishwanath came first to Shri Jaigeeshavya caves on his big return to Kashi from Mandar mountains range. This tale may sound funny but once you understand Hindu’s lords’ hierarchy system and a basic common sense of mysterious cosmic force, negating this theory is remote.
Lord Vishwanath orders Lord Nandi to bring exhausted Shri Jaigeeshavya closer to him. Nandi lord caress Shri Jaigeeshavya body with a lotus power energised by Lord Vishwanath. Instantly the sage recovers from a very long stressful penance with an indomitable energy. Lord Nandi brings the sage before Lord Vishwanath.
Shri Jaigeeshavya gets shocked with manifestation of God shiva before him along with divine mother Parvati. He praises the “Great God” with a hymn.
God shiva pleased with his impeccable devotion instructs Shri Jaigeeshavya to seek any boon. The blessed sage pleads to God Shiva, the sage shall never move away from divine feet of God Shiva. God shiva shall be permanent god at his place of penance.
God shiva grants the requested boon. Henceforth, God shiva assumes the popular iconic divine symbol of shiva ling at the place where he blessed sage Shri Jaigeeshavya. The caves of Shri Jaigeeshavya are just 100 meters away from the said Shri Jaigeeshavya Mahadev temple.
The supreme god was happier to bestow additional boons to Shri Jaigeeshavya. He grants the sage the possession of divine wisdom of yoga that leads to salvation. He shall be the great yoga guru for many yogis.. He shall be knowledgeable of all secrets of the mystic yoga… He shall be on par with his great devotees” Bhringi, Soma “in the cosmic span. God declares he was immensely happy to observe the austere practise of not consuming even drop of water by sage.
Further, Mahadev confirms moksha status to the great soul with a permanent seat of honor allocated to him in shiva’s inner divine chambers.
Shiva declares who ever worships the Ishwar ling of God Shiva namely “Shri Jaigeeshavya Mahadev” for three years, secures the real power of yoga. And also, whoever practises yoga at the caves of Shri Jaigeeshavya, shall obtain the big blessings of God shiva with a much easier process.
Hence the devotees desirous of attaining salvation are advised to worship Shri Jaigeeshavya. It is divine blessing if one sees the cave of great penance by Shri Jaigeeshavya with humbleness but not with an iota of doubt.
Shiva also declares who ever feeds devotees, he becomes the holy soul. It is advised not to focus on this great shiva ling before filthy persons. God shiva smiles at sage saying his hymn on supreme god made the god very happy. Shiva assures whoever listens to this miracle with a pure heart becomes sin free. They will never face obstacles.
Shiva devotees are advised to begin a pilgrimage on the auspicious day. The historic moment of Vishwanath return incidentally coincides with Jyeshta month, often coincides during period of last days of June. The Hindu almanac treats the Som Var of Shukla Paksh of Jyeshta Mas ,Chatur Dasi Din, Thidhi, on ascendent of Star “Anuradha” as very holy. If not inconvenient, it is advised to have blessings of Mahadev at this temple on this auspicious day. This time concept needs tiny adjustment. Please cross check with learned scholars of Kashi.
Goddess Parvati is also blessing devotees as the consort of the Mahadev.
“Oblations to ancestors blesses the devotees “is another principle echoed here at IshwarGangi, the place of Shri Jaigeeshavya caves.
As a result, the Jaigeeshavya Mahadev is blessing the devotees since many centuries. The importance given to sage Jaigeeshavya by Lord Vishwanath is a BIG DIVINE FACT AND BLESSING.
Devi Bhagavat Upamanyu Shri Jaigeeshavya
Rishi Upamanyu is a very famous rishi among devotees of God Shiva. As per Devi Bhagavat, another scripture dedicated to the goddess, Rishi Upamanyu is welcomed and greeted by Rishi Jaigeeshavya whenever Rishi Upamanyu visits a divine world in the heavenly worlds. The other rishis informed him the Rishi Jaigeeshavya is of earlier periods and of higher rank.
